First, Let’s talk about the way this program Hits:
First and Foremost ya’ll its free! With the inflation in the world, this is my favorite and most important perk!
Easy Set up: It takes less than 10 minutes to get your kids started and ready to go!
Good Teaching: As a parent and teacher, I want to know that my kiddos are getting some good solid teaching if I am not the one doing it! And Zearn does just that!
The Good Kind of Dopamine: It’s super interactive, affirming, and colorful, so kiddos don’t get too bored quickly!
Inclusive: They have a diverse set of teachers that include both people of color and women, and when we are talking about math, it’s really important equity-wise for students to see themselves represented.
Now, let’s address some of the Misses:
Practice: Unfortunately, there are only a few practice questions, and the additional practice can only be found in printed problem sets and exit tickets. If you are a school or district you can purchase those here. However, if you are a parent, homeschool teacher, or traditional teacher, you will have to print those out yourself, adding a little extra prep. Check out my video on how to bind a book here or my blog on how to pair Zearn with some additional programs for less prep!
Progress Monitoring: You can only see if students are working in the program and how long. However, the metrics for determining how a student is doing is lacking. Youy would need those exit tickets or problem sets to determine that!
No built in diagnostic or assessment tool: Again, similiar to progress monitoring,m there are no tools that determine what level that specific child is working at, You would have to use the printed tools or go by grade level. And lets face it, whetehra a homeschool parent or a teacher in a classroom, children learn at different levels!
I am always going to recommend Zearn, always! However, it is best for students who are at grade level; yes, you can go up and you can go down, but it’s challenging to ensure that students who are working above or below grade level are actually grasping the concepts and ready to move on to the next lesson.
